1 (salut mental):This is a great start. I am so pleased that there is an acknowledgement of the wide variety of definitions existing in the world of professionals. I would personally like to see less emphasis on connections between hyperacusis and supposedly abnormal behaviour. It would be nice to read an acknowledgement that what appears to be abnormal behaviour is more likely to be a consequence of hyperacusis, not a cause. As a sufferer of hyperacusis, I am particularly unhappy when I read that psychologist Martin Schecklmann writes in his paper Phenotypic Characteristics of Hyperacusis in Tinnitus (Jan.2014 Vol9, Issue1 PLOS 1) that a simple definition of hyperacusis is a "consistently exaggerated or inappropriate response to sounds that are neither threatening nor uncomfortably loud to a typical person". He is quoting here a study of hyperacusis in children with Williams syndrome and applying it to people who do not have Williams syndrome?! I've read that Schecklmann along with a number of other psychologists will be attending the forthcoming international conference on hyperacusis in London this year and I am fed up with the (unfortunately) widespread notion that hyperacusis is a behavioural problem. I will not be cured of hyperacusis by being prevented from putting my fingers in my ears when my hubby slams the car door shut - I don't believe that I can be taught that that sound is not painful.

2 (crítica audiòlegs)Your story is exactly where my life is right now and has been for many years. It sickens me to know that doctors are telling people not use protection because decibels under 85 can't hurt us. audio doctors are making the worst mistakes and we are suffering from their bad advice. Once you have Hyperacusis it is a MUST to wear protection when ever you feel the need to, whether you are alone or in company, Ear plugs are required no matter what any doctor tells you. I had to give up being a musician over 8 years ago. sold all my guitars and live a very solitude and quiet life and don't socialize at all. I can't do that anymore. and TRT training is a joke and not a real treatment. I know much more than most so called doctors in this field.
